Shuchi Muley — Self Portrait in Stripes

About the Artist

I love painting people and capturing their moments — when they are in a contemplative mode, or a child's sweet giggle, or a toothless smile. To capture the freshness of the expression, I always prefer painting from life.

Hi! I'm Shuchi Muley, a representational artist based in Austin, Texas. What I love most is painting people and the fleeting moments that make us human — a quiet, contemplative gaze, a child's sudden giggle, the gift of a toothless smile. Those moments are so precious, and to keep their expressions fresh and alive, I almost always paint from life.

I trained in the classical tradition of drawing and painting under artist Sadie Valeri at the Sadie Valeri Atelier, where I learned still life drawing and the Flemish technique of indirect oil painting. Sadie also sparked my love of the figure, and in 2014 that led me to France, where I studied figure drawing and painting with Timothy Stotz and Michelle Tully at Studio Escalier.

For a year, I split each day between two classrooms — mornings in the studio and afternoons at the Louvre, copying the works of Renaissance masters. Studying the old masters up close and learning to read their brushwork was an extraordinary experience. I have also studied with artist Michele Dunaway, whose influence on me and my work runs deep.

My work has been shown in national and international exhibitions, including the Royal Watercolour Society in the United Kingdom, the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath in India, and the Sztuka Wyboru gallery in Poland. In 2016, I also worked as a painter on the Academy Award–nominated film “Loving Vincent.”

I'm also available for commissions — I'd love to hear from you. Please reach out through my contact page.
